Darrelle Revis trade rumors: Jets willing to wait for 2014 compensation

John Idzik isn’t exactly looking for immediate compensation for trading Darrelle Revis. A pick or two for the 2014 NFL Draft would be fine at this point.

The Darrelle Revis saga added another chapter on Tuesday, as Jets general manager John Idzik is apparently content with taking his time in dealing his star cornerback to another team this season. According to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York, Idzik is willing to receive a first-round pick, and possibly a few other selections for the 2014 NFL Draft in return for Revis.

Cimini notes dealing Revis after this year’s draft is an option now. New York doesn’t have to rush to get a deal done if it is set on rebuilding with the 2014 draft.

The lengthy quest to trade Revis began back in January when the news of Jets shopping him initially broke. From that point on we’ve heard the 49ers are the front-runners, to the Eagles are interested in Revis, to the Buccaneers are the likely suitor for the 27-year-old corner. It’s a revolving door of misinformation at times, with Rex Ryan even denying the Jets’ interest in trading Revis.

Tampa Bay was recently considering trading its first-round pick in April for Revis, and it seemed like a deal was inevitable from some reports. Now the Buccaneers appear displeased with the negotiations. There’s no telling how close the two sides are at this point.

If the Jets can strike a deal for a first-round selection in 2014, they can start searching for their quarterback of the future. David Garrard won’t be the savior in New York, and the majority of the league agrees Mark Sanchez is not the answer. And Tim Tebow . . . never mind.

New York will do everything in its power to receive compensation for Revis before he can void the rest of his contract in 2014. Idzik doesn’t appear to be pulling the trigger on any deal without at least a first-round pick.
