Redskins rumors: Chris Cooley still in play for Washington

Chris Cooley is a free agent once again but the Redskins are still somewhat interested in keeping him around for another season.

Chris Cooley re-signed with the Redskins in 2012 after Fred Davis was placed on injured reserve. Now a free agent once again, Washington is still showing some interest in retaining Cooley for the upcoming season, according to Rich Campbell of The Washington Times.

Cooley is considering interest from other teams right now, but the Redskins are still in the mix. He’s played with Washington since entering the league in 2004. General manager Bruce Allen noted Cooley’s long-time loyalty to the franchise.

“I spoke to his agent here, and there’s some interest in Chris,” Allen told the Washington Times. “He might decide to play for another team. I’m not saying he wants to - believe me - but he will always be a Redskin. There’s no about it.”

The Redskins’ all-time leading receiver at tight end didn’t make much of an impact on offense last year, catching just a single pass in nine games. He will turn 31 this summer and has dealt with multiple injuries in recent years.

Washington re-signed Logan Paulsen on March 9, leaving him and Niles Paul as the two contenders for the top spot on the depth chart at tight end in 2013. Davis is still looking for a contract renewal as well after playing under a franchise tag in 2012.

“We’re going to see how everything plays out a little bit,” said Allen when asked about re-signing Cooley. He doesn’t appear to be close to making a decision on Cooley or Davis.
