Redskins, Fred Davis negotiating deal, according to Mike Shanahan

Mike Shanahan indicated Tuesday that the Redskins are currently in negotiations with Fred Davis. Coming off injured reserve, Davis may have no choice but to accept a reduced paycheck.

When the Washington Redskins re-signed Logan Paulsen on March 9, the writing on the wall indicated that Fred Davis would soon be leaving town. Head coach Mike Shanahan gave a glimmer of hope on Tuesday, however, saying that he wants to see Davis in D.C. next season.

Davis played just seven games last season before landing on injured reserve due to a torn Achilles tendon. He had been relatively productive before being forced to the sidelines, however, recording 24 receptions and 325 yards off 31 targets in the passing game.

Still, Paulsen started to take on a larger role within the offense even while Davis was healthy. Though he didn't quite match Davis' per-game productivity, Paulsen showed enough to give Redskins fans some confidence that the tight end position would be just fine in 2013 with Niles Paul also able to catch passes.

Shanahan’s comments Tuesday indicate that the team still feels Davis is worth pursuing, however, despite the injury risk. The fact that Davis is still on the market suggests he has yet to receive a great contract offer, making a return to the Redskins perhaps the best outcome for both sides.
