Will Herring tweets that he will return to Saints

Linebacker and special teams ace Will Herring has re-signed with the Saints, less than one week after being released by the same team.

Linebacker Will Herring became a free agent last week when he was released by the New Orleans Saints. Just a few days later, he has apparently come to terms with the formerly former team.

According to Pro Football Talk, Herring’s release had less to do with Herring’s play and more to do with his contract. Due to cost $1.6 million against the salary cap this season, Herring simply renegotiated his contract with the Saints during the brief period he was on the free agent market. Terms of the new deal have not yet been revealed, but presumably the Saints will have more room to work with under the salary cap going forward.

Herring was a key special teamer with the Saints last season, recording 13 tackles in 16 games, including a career-high two forced fumbles. He has yet to earn regular playing time on defense through two seasons in New Orleans, however. That could potentially change with new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan in town, but more than likely Herring will retain his usual role.
