NFL free agent news: D.J. Williams signing highlights quiet Friday

The Bears are expected to move on without Brian Urlacher and solidified that decision by signing linebacker D.J. Williams on Friday.

The NFL free agency market hasn't run dry yet, but has definitely slowed and didn't feature many noteworthy signings on Friday, as D.J. Williams headlined the day by signing with the Chicago Bears.

Williams, 30, is expected to step into the void left by Brian Urlacher’s departure. The linebacker with a history of off-the-field incidents received a one-year deal from the team worth $900,000, making him an inexpensive stop-gap for the Bears as they look to address the position long-term.

Other Friday signings included a pair of players joining the Cleveland Browns, as both Chris Owens and Kellen Davis agreed to one-year deals with the team. Owens, 26, was a third-round selection of the Atlanta Falcons in the 2009 NFL Draft and made 12 starts in four years with the team as a reserve cornerback. Davis, 27, served as the starting tight end for the Bears in each of the last two seasons.

Many of the NFL headlines were instead dominated by the announcement that the Baltimore Ravens and the MLB's Baltimore Orioles were unable to reach an agreement that would allow the defending Super Bowl champions to host a home game in Week 1. Instead the Orioles will have a game against the Chicago White Sox on Thursday, Sept. 5 that forces the Ravens to play on the road.

Also on Friday, Montana police reports indicated that St. Louis Rams defensive back Trumaine Johnson was arrested in the morning for driving under the influence. A third-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, Johnson started in three games for the Rams in 2012 and finished the year with two interceptions.
