Dwight Freeney rumors: Free agent defender wants $6 million per year

Elvis Dumervil received $7 million per year from the Baltimore Ravens and Freeney wants a similar amount.

Former-Indianapolis Colts pass rusher Dwight Freeney is still on the open market with a couple teams showing interest, but he has to find a new team and that may be due to his price tag, as he is looking for a contract worth $6 million per year, according to NFL.com's Albert Breer.

Elvis Dumervil, the top pass rusher in the free agency class, signed with the Baltimore Ravens on a five-year deal worth $35 million, averaging out to $7 million per season. Four years older than Dumervil and no longer as productive, Freeney's goal of $6 million per year could be an optimistic one.

Freeney, 33, made seven Pro Bowls during his 11-year career with the Indianapolis Colts, but finished with just five sacks in the new-look, 3-4 defense in 2012. However, among the teams that have shown interest in Freeney are the Pittsburgh Steelers, a team that is historically known for its 3-4 scheme. Also interested have been the Denver Broncos, as they are looking for a replacement for Dumervil.

In 11 seasons with the Colts, Freeney accumulated 107.5 career sacks, the most in franchise history and fifth-most among active NFL players.
