Matt Flynn rumors: Seahawks QB involved in trade talks, according to report

Just one year after signing him to a free agent deal, the Seattle Seahawks are reportedly close to trading backup quarterback Matt Flynn.

The Seattle Seahawks could be close to trading quarterback Matt Flynn, according to ESPN's Ed Werder. The team has reportedly been shopping Flynn since the end of the season, just one year after signing him to a three year, $19.5 million deal. Flynn was supposed to be the new starter, but was beat out by rookie Russell Wilson in training camp.

The other teams involved in trade talks are unknown, but the consensus seems to be that the Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Oakland Raiders are all interested. The Jaguars reportedly passed on Flynn after looking into him earlier this spring. Flynn could step into each of those situations and be the favorite to start the 2013 season. The Seahawks will probably get first-round pick in return for Flynn, but one or two mid-round selections would seem to be the going rate for a player of his caliber.

It remains to be seen what Flynn can offer a team as a starting quarterback. When Seattle acquired him last spring, it was assumed that he would finally get his shot at a starting gig; then Russell Wilson burst onto the scene, making Flynn expendable. A report from Jason Cole at Yahoo sports cited sources inside the Packers organization, where Flynn got his start, pointing to concerns that he lacks the arm strength to be a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Green Bay drafted Flynn, an LSU product, in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft. In his five year NFL career, Flynn has started two games. He’s completed over 61% of his passes, and thrown for 1,083 yards, nine touchdowns, and five interceptions.
