Matt Flynn trade rumors: Oakland likely to keep 2013 draft picks, per Peter King

The Raiders are in pursuit of trading for Seattle’s backup quarterback. How much is Matt Flynn worth to Oakland?

Oakland is in the market for acquiring Matt Flynn, but they won't be overpaying for his services. Sports Illustrated's Peter King believes the Raiders will keep their 2013 draft picks in tact while making a deal for the Seahawks backup quarterback. Future selections in 2014 or 2015 are the likely compensation.

As King notes, Oakland has just three picks in the first five rounds this April. For a team with a handful of glaring needs on the roster, shipping out any of those picks for Flynn would simply create a worse scenario. He’s still expected to bring in a mid-round selection for Seattle, but King thinks it will be for the 2014 draft.

Reports over the weekend escalated the Flynn-to-Oakland rumors. Now a trade that’s expected to be finalized soon, Flynn looks like he will finally get a chance to prove himself as a starter.

Carson Palmer is set to earn $13 million with the Raiders in 2013. That's not a price they appear willing to pay. He seems to be on his way out, with Arizona as the expected landing spot for the 33-year-old quarterback. Flynn provides a cheaper, younger option for Oakland.

Flynn has only started two games in his NFL career. His most notable appearance came in his dominant display against a poor Lions secondary two years ago. Somehow that seems to be enough evidence for teams to continue to target him. The Seahawks will be looking for a new backup for Russell Wilson, one that doesn't cost $7.25 million in cap space.
