2013 NFL free agency: Sammie Lee Hill drawing plenty of interest

The Lions’ defensive tackle has been in the shadow of Nick Fairley and Ndamukong Suh throughout his career and appears ready to move on from Detroit.

For the past few seasons, Sammie Lee Hill has been buried on the Detroit Lions' depth chart. After a solid rookie season from Hill in 2009, the Lions drafted Ndamukong Suh with the No. 2 pick in the 2010 NFL Draft and Nick Fairley with the No. 12 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, creating a log jam at the defensive tackle position. Throw Cory Williams in the mix, and it was tough for Hill to get snaps.

He may finally get his chance, as the four-year veteran is set to hit the open market. With the NFL’s “legal tampering” period of free agency opening up on Friday night, Hill received interest from four teams, according to Anwar Richardson of MLive.com. The Lions are not one of those teams.

With the money and draft choices the Lions have tied up in the defensive line, it’s not a huge surprise that they would let Hill walk. However, given the brief sample size, Hill has proven to have some ability. He may not command a ton of money on the open market and should have his best football in front of him. Hill is just the type of ascending player smart teams target during the free agency period. The best thing for his career is to get out of Detroit.
