Linebacker Dannell Ellerbe has said that he wishes to stay a member of the Baltimore Ravens and it has been reported that the team has made him a top priority; however, no deal has been reached and other teams are now in the mix, according to Ellerbe's agent.
Dannell Ellerbe free agent rumors: LB draws interest from several teams
One team called to inquire about the Ravens linebacker at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday morning, according to Ellerbe’s agent.
On Saturday, the first day of the new three-day, pre-free agency shopping period in which front offices can contact prospective free agents, Ellerbe’s agent Hadley Englehard told Jim Corbett of USA Today Sports that several teams have contacted him, including one at the exact moment they had the opportunity to do so.
“I’ve had dialogue with teams. There were several. One team in particular called me at 12:01.”
Ellerbe, 27, saw the most playing time of his career after a triceps injury sent Ray Lewis to the injured reserve. Ellerbe filled in admirably, accumulating 92 tackles and 4.5 sacks on a team that eventually found its way to the Super Bowl, where it defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 34-31.
He made an impact in the postseason as well, intercepting Tom Brady in the fourth quarter of the AFC Championship to end a last chance at a comeback for the New England Patriots.
The 2013 NFL free agency period is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, March 12.
