Panthers rumors: Wide receiver Domenik Hixon visits Monday

Domenik Hixon is giving the Panthers a visit. Could he fill the void as the No. 3 wideout on the depth chart next season?

In the wake of Louis Murphy signing with the New York Giants, the Carolina Panthers are still looking to find a replacement for their No. 3 receiver heading into next season. According to Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer, wide receiver Domenik Hixon is set to visit with the team on Monday.

Hixon spent the past five seasons with the Giants. Last season he caught 39 passes for 567 yards and two touchdowns in 13 games played. He missed a few games with an ankle injury in 2012, but was also overshadowed by Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks when the whole group was healthy.

The Panthers are set with Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell as the top receivers for 2013. Ted Ginn Jr. and Joe Adams are next in line on the depth chart. While Ginn will by vying for targets, Hixon would step in as the third wideout on the depth chart if he signs.

Cap space is tight these days for Carolina. After entering the offseason with around $3.5 million to work with, general manager David Gettleman has worked diligently to free up room for new signings. The Panthers recently saved $6.8 million by restructuring left tackle Jordan Gross' contract. Now they actually have decent room to work with. Signing Hixon won't be a costly move, either.

Before coming to Carolina in January, Gettleman served as the Giants director of pro personnel for 13 years. His prior tie to Hixon makes this a logical move for the Panthers. Plus, Cam Newton could use another weapon in the passing game.
