Bears moves: Chicago signs Josh McCown, Matt Slauson

The Bears found a backup for Jay Cutler and added depth to their offensive line over the weekend. Here’s a look at their recent roster moves.

The Chicago Bears have agreed to terms with quarterback Josh McCown and offensive guard Matt Slauson. Both players will receive one-year deals for the 2013 season.

McCown originally signed with Chicago in 2011. He was released last year at the end of the preseason, but the Bears chose to bring him back in November. With Jason Campbell gone, McCown will serve as the primary backup for Jay Cutler.

As Michael C. Wright of ESPN Chicago notes, McCown was a liaison between Cutler and the coaching staff last season. The Bears starting quarterback wasn’t happy when the team parted ways with McCown. Perhaps Chicago kept Cutler’s feelings in mind with this move.

Slauson started at left guard for the New York Jets over the last three seasons. Pro Football Focus rated him at No. 31 overall among all offensive guards in 2012. He excels in pass blocking, but run blocking is a concern for the 27-year-old.

Wright believes Slauson will fill Lance Louis' spot at right guard. Louis signed with the Miami Dolphins last week. Cutler should be pleased with this signing as well.
