Antoine Winfield rumors: Vikings, Redskins remain in picture for FA cornerback

Antoine Winfield certainly isn’t facing a lack of suitors these days. Several teams are interested in signing the veteran cornerback.

After meeting with the Washington Redskins last week, Antoine Winfield is still uncertain as to where he will be playing in 2013. The veteran cornerback has drawn interest from several teams in free agency, but the Redskins and Minnesota Vikings appear to be the two franchises pushing the hardest to sign him.

As Tom Pelissero of ESPN 1500 Twin Cities notes, the Vikings have been in contact with Winfield daily. Head coach Leslie Frazier wants him back on the team. Minnesota released Winfield on March 12 to save $7.25 million in cap space.

The Redskins threw everything they had at Winfield in their meeting this past Thursday. Owner Dan Snyder, head coach Mike Shanahan, defensive staff personnel and even Robert Griffin III were all in attendance. Winfield left without a deal in place, though, leaving the door open for the Vikings.

Winfield is reportedly seeking $5 million for next season. Brent Grimes just received a one-year, $5 million contract from the Miami Dolphins. The cornerback market hasn't been friendly to the remaining veterans, but Winfield has several options at this point.

Washington is tight on cap space after suffering an $18 million cap penalty for each of the next two seasons. The Redskins have around $3.3 million left to spend, while the Vikings sit at $5 million under the cap. Both teams would have to make roster moves to give Winfield what he’s reportedly expecting.
