NFL free agent tracker: Saints sign Kenyon Coleman

Rob Ryan brought in a player familiar with his system on Monday. The Saints have signed defensive end Kenyon Coleman to a one-year deal.

Defensive end Kenyon Coleman signed a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints on Monday, according to Larry Holder of The Times-Picayune. Coleman was offered the contract on Friday and made his signing official after taking the weekend to think it over.

After playing under defensive coordinator Rob Ryan over the past four seasons with Dallas and Cleveland, Coleman already knows the system he’ll be running with the Saints. Soon to be 34, Coleman is heading into his 12th season in the league. He brings a veteran presence to New Orleans.

A better fit as a 3-4 defensive end, Coleman excels in stopping the run. He’s recorded 13.5 sacks since entering the league in 2002, so the Saints know what type of role player they’re getting with this deal.

The move adds depth to the Saints defensive line. Coleman will serve as a backup to Cameron Jordan and Akiem Hicks, likely as an early-down player.
