NFL news roundup: James Harrison meets with Cincinnati Bengals

There isn’t a deal in place, but James Harrison’s meeting with the Bengals went well. Let’s look at his visit and the rest of the ongoings from the NFL on Thursday.

The NFL Draft is the main event on the horizon for the league right now, but there are still quite a few players looking for new contracts on the free agent market. James Harrison made headlines with a recent visit to Cincinnati, and Philadelphia was finally able to trade Dion Lewis. Teams are keeping busy leading up to the end of April.

Here’s a look at some of the major stories from Thursday.

James Harrison meets with Bengals

After being released by the Steelers, Harrison might be looking to stay in the AFC North. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported the Bengals liked what they heard during the visit, and Harrison talked with linebackers coach Paul Guenther until midnight on Wednesday.

The two sides didn’t reach a deal, but as long his asking price isn’t too high, Harrison looks like a smart move. Cincinnati still has a ton of cap space to work with.

Browns acquire Dion Lewis

The Eagles tried to trade Lewis last year, but no one was interested. Now the Browns will put the 22-year-old running back in the mix behind Trent Richardson. Cleveland sent linebacker Emmanuel Acho to Philadelphia in return for Lewis. He will help add depth in the transition to a 3-4 defense under head coach Chip Kelly.

Saints sign Jason Smith

Jermon Bushrod created a void at left tackle when he left New Orleans earlier in free agency. Jason Smith won't fix the issue for the Saints, but he brings depth and added competition to the roster.

The former No. 2 overall pick was a huge bust with the Rams, dealing with concussion issues and an inability to stop any rushing defender. He served as a backup last year for the Jets. Can he turn things around with his third team?

Raiders still shopping for quarterbacks

The reported Seneca Wallace signing proved to be false, so Oakland remains in the market for another passer. Vince Young, Tyler Thigpen and Troy Smith are all in the mix with Wallace. Thigpen was the only quarterback among the four to be on a roster last season. Young reportedly looked good in his workout Thursday.

Alfonzo Dennard receives jail time

Dennard will spend 30 days in jail after being convicted for assault and resisting arrest. The incident occurred last April prior to him being drafted by the Patriots, so Roger Goodell won't be suspending the young cornerback. Dennard's sentence won't begin until March of 2014.
