Bernard Scott re-signs with Bengals for one year, according to agent

Bernard Scott agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Bengals on Friday. Can he compete for a backup running back role coming off a torn ACL?

Bernard Scott has agreed to terms on a new one-year contract with the Cincinnati Bengals, according to USA Today's Mike Garafolo. Scott's 2012 season ended prematurely when he tore his ACL in October. He'll return to the Bengals to compete for the team's top backup spot behind BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

The deal comes as somewhat of a surprise. As the SB Nation blog Cincy Jungle pointed out a few weeks ago, Scott was not expected to re-sign with the team. Though terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed, there’s a chance that Scott was re-signed to the league minimum, making a later release much easier to handle should his injury problems from 2012 resurface.

That said, if Scott is able to return 100 percent, he could be a valuable contributor next season. After being selected in the sixth round of the 2009 NFL Draft, Scott has averaged 4.1 yards per carry over four seasons with the Bengals. He is also an accomplished kick returner, averaging 24.5 yards on 73 kickoff return attempts, including a touchdown during his rookie year.
