The split between Ed Reed and the team that drafted him was one that the Baltimore Ravens appeared to resist by entering a bidding war with the Houston Texans for the nine-time Pro Bowler, but that couldn't be further from the truth, according to Mike Preston of the Baltimore Sun.

The Ravens only entered a bidding war for Reed out of respect for the safety and to help drive his price tag up, according to a report.

The Super Bowl champs lost some of the team's top players. That's hardly a problem for GM Ozzie Newsome. In fact, Preston said on Monday that Ravens head coach John Harbaugh “wanted Reed back as much as he wants a root canal.” The only reason the Ravens pursued a contract with Reed, according to Preston, was out of respect to the future Hall of Famer and to help drive up his price tag with the Texans.
In 11 seasons with the Ravens, Reed started in all but 17 games, making at least 10 starts in each season. He accumulated 61 interceptions, placing him 10th all-time, and returned seven for touchdowns, also placing him 10th all-time. He is the all-time leader in interception return yardage.
The Ravens made a move to replace Reed last week by signing former-Oakland Raiders defensive back Michael Huff to a three-year contract. In seven seasons with the Raiders, Huff had experience playing in both safety positions as well as some time at cornerback in 2012.
