Daryl Smith leaves Rams visit without contract

St. Louis couldn’t come to terms with linebacker Daryl Smith before he left to explore other options.

Free agent linebacker Daryl Smith has left the St. Louis Rams facilities without a contract, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The ex-Jacksonville Jaguars standout has had a tough time finding a home as a 31-year veteran coming off of a season in which he played just two games due to a groin injury that cut his season quite short.

Last year aside, Smith is one of the most underrated players in all of football. Languishing in complete anonymity with the Jaguars, Smith has been extremely productive since coming into the league in 2004.

In his nine NFL seasons, Smith has recorded 100 or more tackles twice and had 21.5 sacks in his career, a nice total for a 4-3 linebacker. He’s also proven to be very durable except for 2012, playing 14 or more games every other season.

Smith is also one of the better coverage linebackers in football, something that is more important than ever with the emergence of so many good tight ends.

It's surprising the Rams didn't find a way to make this marriage work considering the obvious need they have. Outside of middle linebacker James Laurinaitis, the roster is very thin at that position.
