Police returned to the home of New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez on Wednesday, two days after a body was found near a rental car. Officers did not enter the home at that time, but ABC News reports that investigators plan to execute a search warrant on an Enterprise rental car registered under Hernandez' name.
Police return to Aaron Hernandez’ home; plan to search rental car
Aaron Hernandez still isn’t considered a suspect in the ongoing murder investigation near his home, but police returned to the scene on Wednesday and plan on searching the rental car that was close to the body.
The body was discovered near the car about a mile away from Hernandez’ home with a gunshot wound in the head, according to reports. The case is being treated as a homicide.
Hernandez has not been identified as a suspect and he cooperated with authorities during a home search on Tuesday, but the investigation is still moving forward on his property.
The victim is reported to be 27-year-old Odin Lloyd, a man described as an “associate” of Hernandez in various reports. Police in North Attleboro, Ma., referred SB Nation to the Bristol County District Attorney’s office where a spokesperson said that a victim’s name has not been released by investigators.
Hernandez’s agency, Athletes First, is not commenting at this moment. Likewise, the Patriots’ organization declined to elaborate on the investigation, with a spokesman simply saying “I am aware of the reports, but I do not anticipate that we will be commenting publicly during an ongoing police investigation.”
Hernandez had 51 catches for 483 yards and five touchdowns last season while battling an ankle injury. He has been spending the offseason recovering from a shoulder surgery.
