The NFL released a statement Thursday in response to the Aaron Hernandez situation. The former New England Patriots tight end cleared waivers on Thursday after being released by the team a day earlier. As the statement explains, if a team wished to extend an offer to Hernandez, the contract would first need to be approved by league commissioner Roger Goodell.
NFL releases statement on Aaron Hernandez
The NFL released a statement explaining that any team that wants to sign Aaron Hernandez will have to hold a hearing in front of commissioner Roger Goodell.
NFL clubs were advised today that if Aaron Hernandez enters into a player contract prior to the resolution of the charges pending against him, the contract will not be approved or take effect until Commissioner Roger Goodell holds a hearing. The purpose of the hearing would be to determine whether Hernandez should be suspended or face other action prior to the charges being resolved.
Hernandez has been arrested on a charge of first degree murder, as well as five gun-related charges, after the body of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd was found near Hernandez’s house last week. Earlier Thursday, reports revealed that police are also investigating Hernandez in connection to a double-murder that took place in Boston last summer.
