Seven months after their star quarterback went under the knife to repair a torn ACL, the Washington Redskins may be taking a page out of the Adrian Peterson comeback guide when it comes to their treatment of Robert Griffin III. The team is considering placing Griffin on the physically unable to perform list to begin training camp, according to Ian Rapoport on NFL Total Access.

The Redskins may place RGIII on the physically unable to perform list to begin training camp in an effort to ease him back into football shape.

Griffin would be eligible to come off the PUP list at any time, but would not be allowed to take part in team drills until after that point.
The move would be similar to the way the Vikings handled the return of Peterson after a similar injury in 2011. The All-Pro running back was placed on the PUP list for the beginning of 2012 training camp, where he went through individual drills before eventually working his way back onto the active roster and rejoining the rest of the team.
Griffin initially suffered his injury in the Redskins' playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks and underwent surgery to repair torn ligaments in his knee on Jan. 9. Though he has insisted he would be ready for the beginning of camp, the team is likely being as cautious as possible after taking heavy flak for their treatment of the quarterback's injury in that playoff loss.
Peterson’s amazing 2012 comeback performance has made him the model for overcoming serious knee injuries in sports. After undergoing reconstructive surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee to close 2011, Peterson exploded back onto the NFL scene last season, rushing for over 2,000 yards and 12 touchdowns and earning league MVP.
Peterson recently spoke to Griffin to offer advice on his injury rehab, claiming in an interview with USA Today that he was optimistic the young quarterback would recover fully:
RGIII’s confidence level is where mine was at and I think he’ll be back Week 1 and each week, he’ll get stronger. I have a lot of confidence in the young guy. I’ve been with him a couple of times, and judging by how he approached his rookie year, if he continues taking that same strong mindset and applies it to his rehab, he’ll do better this season than last.
