Robert Griffin III injury: Redskins QB expected back mid-August

Robert Griffin III should return to the Redskins by Aug. 15, according to SI’s Peter King, giving the quarterback time to get ready for the season opener.

Last we heard, Robert Griffin III was set to open Washington Redskins training camp on the PUP list. According to Sports Illustrated's Peter King, that may still be the case. However, King believes that Griffin will be ready to rejoin the Redskins by Aug. 15, just before the team's second preseason game, and should be ready for the season opener barring a setback during training camp or preseason.

Comparisons with Adrian Peterson are inevitable, given that both high-profile players suffered significant late-season knee injuries. Peterson's recovery is potentially instructive, however. The Minnesota Vikings also held Peterson on the PUP list before activating him in time for Week 1. He then went on to fall nine yards short of setting the NFL's single-season rushing record.

Griffin's story now is that there currently is no story. Whether Griffin opens training camp with the Redskins may be moot. Griffin has a firm hold on the starting job, and knowing this, the Redskins will likely remain cautious, especially considering how much grief they took for how they handled Griffin during their Jan. 9 playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Reports indicate that Griffin’s recovery is still on track, and that is very good news for Redskins fans.
