Robert Griffin III injury: Redskins QB cleared to practice

Robert Griffin III announced Monday that his doctors have cleared him to practice. The Redskins open training camp on July 25.

Robert Griffin III announced Monday morning that doctors have cleared him to practice for the Washington Redskins. Griffin has been recovering from a torn ACL suffered against the Seattle Seahawks during the 2013 NFL Playoffs for more than six months. According to Griffin, coaches will "ease me in." He will not be on the physically unable to perform list, and will be actively participating in 7-on-7 drills when the Redskins open training camp on Thursday, July 25, according to NFL.com's Albert Breer.

Rich Campbell from the Washington Times reported that Griffin was recently examined by Dr. James Andrews, paving the way for his return.

Last month, Griffin was expected to open camp on the PUP list. On Monday, Peter King reported in his weekly Monday Morning Quarterback column for Sports Illustrated that the quarterback was expected back by mid-August. Many projected Griffin to be ready for the Sept. 9 regular season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, and barring a setback that should be the case.

Griffin won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors after passing for 3,200 yards and 20 touchdowns, and rushing for 815 yards and seven touchdowns to help lead the Redskins to their first playoff appearance since the 2007-08 season. Griffin beat out the likes of Russell Wilson and Andrew Luck for ROY honors.
