Dustin Keller injury: Dolphins TE placed on injured reserve

Dustin Keller’s season is over after suffering a complete knee tear during the Dolphins’ preseason loss to the Texans on Saturday.

Dustin Keller has been placed on injured reserve by the Miami Dolphins, the team announced Tuesday. Keller suffered a complete knee tear during Saturday's preseason loss to the Texans. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the injury as a dislocated kneecap with a torn ACL, PCL and MCL.

The news confirms that Keller should be out for the season. Technically, he could return to the Dolphins after Week 8 if he is designated for return by the team, but the severity of the injury suggests that he is in for lengthy recovery process that could extend well into 2014.

Keller signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins in the offseason. He was hoping to rebound from a 2012 season with the New York Jets that was marred by a nagging hamstring injury. He finished the year with 28 receptions for 317 yards and two touchdowns. In 2011, Keller had a career year, catching 65 passes for 815 yards and five touchdowns.

The Dolphins could fill Keller's void by committee. Charles Clay, Dion Sims and Michael Egnew will be looking to prove themselves starter-worthy over the Dolphins' final two preseason games of the 2013 offseason.
