Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller was suspended for the first six games of the season by the NFL on Tuesday, as detailed by Lindsay Jones of USA Today.

Also according to the report from Jones, the situation stems from a diluted urine sample Miller provided during the offseason. He reportedly spilled his sample during the scheduled test and the sample he provided later was diluted. Miller was already in the NFL’s drug program due to a positive test for marijuana when he was a rookie and the NFL was reportedly considering suspending him for the entire season.

Instead, the NFL and representatives for Miller agreed on a six-game suspension, leaving Denver without its best defensive player for more than a third of the regular season.

The suspension came after a few days of negotiations between the league and Miller’s representatives. According to the report from Jones, Miller will not appeal his suspension and begin serving it following Denver’s final preseason game. He will be eligible to return after Week 6.

Miller issued a statement following the announcement and said while the suspension wasn’t the result of a positive test, there was “no excuse” for his violations of the league rules. Here is Miller’s complete statement:

“The Substances of Abuse policy requires everyone to comply with the rules. Although my suspension doesn’t result from a positive test, there is no excuse for my violations of the rules. I made mistakes and my suspension has hurt my team, Broncos fans, and myself. I am especially sorry for the effect of my bad decisions on others. I will not make the same mistakes about adhering to the policy in the future. During my time off the field, I will work tirelessly and focus exclusively on remaining in peak shape. I look forward to contributing immediately upon my return to the field and bringing a championship back to the people of Denver.”
