Aldon Smith hit a tree, drunk, with weed and pills in the car, per report

Aldon Smith was found with marijuana and pills in his car after being arrested early Friday morning on suspicion of DUI. He could face punishment from the NFL as a result.

More details have emerged surrounding Aldon Smith's arrest early Friday morning under suspicion of DUI. The San Francisco 49ers linebacker blew a .15 on a breathalyzer and was found with marijuana and pills in his car, according to Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News. He was arrested after crashing his car into a tree. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Smith had a prescription for the marijuana, according to Inman’s initial report via Twitter. Inman promptly corrected himself, saying that Smith does not have a prescription. Marijuana use is prohibited by NFL substance-abuse policy, regardless of whether or not the substance has been prescribed by a doctor.

The 49ers gave the Mercury News a statement acknowledging Smith’s arrest:

The 49ers organization is aware of the matter involving Aldon Smith. As we continue to gather information regarding this situation, we will have no further comment.

Smith was also arrested on DUI charges in January of 2012 in Miami Beach. The charges were later reduced to reckless driving.

Smith is off to hot start this season, with 3.5 sacks through two games. He was up for NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors last season after finishing second in the league with 19.5 sacks. Smith also earned Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors in 2012.
