2014 NFC Championship Game, Seahawks vs. 49ers: Stats and things to know

The Seahawks and 49ers meet in the rubber match of their rivalry with the NFC title on the line. Here are some interesting stats to follow during the game.

The stakes are higher than ever on Sunday when the Seattle Seahawks face the San Francisco 49ers for the third time this season. The winner of this game claims the NFC Championship crown and moves on to the Super Bowl. One of the top budding rivalries in football, these two teams are looking to slug it out yet again. With so much on the line, here are some relevant stats and fun trivia to follow during the game.

  • The 49ers have 30 playoff wins, tied for third-most of all time. With a win, they will have sold possession of third place, trailing only the Cowboys and Steelers (33).
  • The 49ers are tied for fifth place with six Super Bowl appearances. A win would move them up to either third or fourth place, depending on the outcome of the Broncos-Patriots AFC title game.
  • The past six NFC Championship Games have had a scoring deficit of seven points or fewer. The Seahawks finished eight games with a winning margin in that range this season and never lost a game by more than seven points.
  • Ahmad Brooks has 4.5 sacks in the postseason so far. No player has recorded more than six sacks in a single postseason since the stat became official.
  • The Seahawks led the NFL with 39 takeaways this season. The 49ers have only committed 44 turnovers over the past three years, fewest in the league.
  • The Seahawks are 8-2 all-time in home playoff games and have won six in a row. Their overall playoff success has been limited, though. Over their past four playoff appearances, Seattle has won the first game and lost the second. The team's only Super Bowl appearance came in the 2005 playoffs.
  • If the 49ers win the Super Bowl, they will tie the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most in league history with six.
  • With a 49ers win, Jim Harbaugh will have six postseason wins, tying Joe Gibbs for the most by an NFL coach in his first three seasons.
  • Since 2010, the 49ers have allowed only five players to rush for over 100 yards. Marshawn Lynch accomplished that three times against San Francisco.
  • This game is the ninth time since 1980 that a pair of top-three scoring defenses will meet in the conference championship game. Every winner of those eight contests has gone on to win the Super Bowl.
