Frank Gore injury: 49ers RB will undergo hand surgery

The veteran running back has a minor hand injury and will undergo surgery on Tuesday.

San Francisco 49ers running back Frank Gore will undergo minor surgery to repair a hand injury. The surgery is not expected to keep him sidelined for long.

Gore reportedly suffered a broken hand during Sunday's NFC Championship loss to the Seattle Seahawks. He was shut down by the Seahawks defense in the game, being held to just 14 yards on 11 carries. The hand injury might help to explain his lack of production and carries. Gore finished the regular season with 1,128 yards and nine touchdowns. It's the seventh time in his career he has rushed for 1,000 or more yards in a season.

The 49ers don't tend to elaborate on injuries, but Gore's hand should be ready in time for the offseason program. He turns 31 in May, but hasn't showed many signs of slowing down. That said, the 49ers are starting to think about the future at running back and could be ready to use Marcus Lattimore, who took his rookie year off to rehab from knee surgery. Gore's contract is up after the 2014 season.
