Richard Sherman apologizes for taking attention away from teammates

Richard Sherman garnered plenty of attention for his comments following the NFC Championship and said he regrets taking the attention away from his teammates.

Richard Sherman made headlines with his comments following Seattle's win in the NFC Championship, but on Monday the All-Pro cornerback apologized for what he said about Michael Crabtree and for the impact what he said had.

“I apologize for attacking an individual and taking the attention away from the fantastic game by my teammates,” Sherman said, via Ed Werder of ESPN. “That was not my intent.”

Sherman has never been one to shy away from speaking his mind. He explained the interview and the comments about Crabtree in a column he wrote for Sports Illustrated on Monday. The apology came less than 24 hours after he made the comments, which have since garnered extensive attention -- possibly more than the play Sherman made to seal the game or Seattle’s victory.

While the apology may help settle the firestorm and return the focus to the matchup between Denver and Seattle, it isn’t likely to change much going forward. Many fans have already formed an opinion of him, one way or the other. Sherman isn’t likely to change either. He’s always spoken freely and while he may regret taking attention away from his teammates, he’ll likely continue to speak his mind. The apology won’t have much impact on the future relations between Seattle and San Francisco. The teams will renew their rivalry next season with the first meeting likely billed as the rematch between Sherman and Crabtree.
