Bears fire offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer

Kromer captured headlines earlier in the year when he admitted he criticized Jay Cutler through anonymous comments to a reporter.

The Chicago Bears are cleaning house after a 5-11 season. Offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer will follow Marc Trestman out the door, according to a report from ESPN's Field Yates.

Kromer took over as the offensive coordinator of the Bears in 2013 when Trestman was hired, and served as the interim head coach for the New Orleans Saints in 2012 during a six-game suspension for Sean Payton. In his first season with the Bears, they finished with the second-most points scored in the NFL, but they fell to No. 23 in scoring in 2014.

The team finished 5-11 and last in the NFC North, but it was criticism of Jay Cutler that earned Kromer some unwanted publicity earlier in the year. Kromer admitted in a tearful apology that he was the anonymous source who told a reporter Cutler's poor play had "absolutely killed" the team's offense.

Even after the apology, Cutler was reportedly angry about the comments behind closed doors, although he said publicly that he wasn’t upset about the criticism. The 31-year-old quarterback signed a seven-year, $126.7 million last offseason.

If Cutler returns to the Bears in 2015, he would work with a fifth different offensive coordinator since he was acquired by the team via trade in the 2009 offseason.
