Peyton Manning becomes NFL’s all-time leading passer

Manning officially owns every major passing category, checking off the last big one held by Brett Favre.

Peyton Manning is now the NFL's all-time leading passer after jumping Brett Favre in career passing yardage on Sunday with a 4-yard pass to Ronnie Hillman.

Manning entered Week 10 needing just 3 yards against the Kansas City Chiefs to eclipse Favre’s mark of 71,838 yards and reached that in the first quarter. Everyone thought Manning would get the record in Week 9 against his former team, the Indianapolis Colts. Entering the game, he needed just 284 yards, but he fell just short when bad penalties on defense prevented him from getting a shot at one more drive to lead the Broncos to a comeback.

His record won't be broken any time soon either, with no other player within 10,000 yards of Manning or Favre. The next closest active players are Drew Brees and Tom Brady, but neither have even reached 60,000 yards. Manning reached the passing record in his 265th career game, beating the pace that Favre set by accumulating his nearly 72,000 yards over 302 career games.

In the 18 seasons since Manning was selected with the No. 1 pick in the 1998 NFL Draft, he has been a model of consistency, averaging 4,218 passing yards per season in 13 years with the Colts before a neck injury sidelined him for all of 2011. In his first three seasons with the Broncos, Manning upped that average to 4,954 yards per season.

With the exception of 2011, Manning has played in all 16 games every year and has been able to keep racking up statistics by staying healthy.

Manning is already the all-time leader in passing touchdowns and owns several other major passing records. In Week 8 he tied Favre for most wins all-time as a starter by improving his record to 186-77.
