NFL Draft picks 2015: Laken Tomlinson goes to Lions at No. 28
After trading down, the Lions took Laken Tomlinson at No. 28.

At 6’3 and 323 pounds, Tomlinson is a physically imposing figure who can line up at either guard spot and perhaps even center. He has started an incredible number games during his Duke career, experience that will help him more easily transition into the NFL. Tomlinson was an All-ACC lineman who was also named to the preseason Outland Trophy watch list.
Tomlinson’s game is about power. He tries to knock his opponents over before looking for another body to rough up at the second level. He’s a throwback player who should do well in a power-blocking scheme.
That said, Tomlinson isn’t a great athlete for the position. He doesn’t move particularly well laterally, and doesn’t recover well if a defender gets to his outside shoulder. His footwork could also use some refinement, though that can be improved over time with NFL coaching.
Tomlinson’s combine numbers illustrate the kind of player he is. His 5.33 second 40-yard dash was one of the slower times in Indianapolis, as was his 8.17 second 3-cone drill. While his 25 reps on the bench weren’t great considering how much strength matters to his game, he generates most of his power from his lower body.
Tomlinson started 39 games during his Duke career. He earned multiple Academic All-ACC honors, as well as All-ACC offensive linemen honors.
