Florida State and SEC win the NFL Draft

The NFL Draft’s first-round winners were Florida State, Washington, the ACC and the Pac-12. With six more rounds now in the books, your overall leader is FSU with 11 picks, followed by Louisville’s 10 and Florida’s eight. Full standings below.

No. 1 pick Jameis Winston was just the first of many Noles. One of this weekend’s subplots was whether the Seminoles could break the all-time record for most picks in a three-year span, the 28 by Miami and USC. FSU topped that by one.

Pick-by-pick results of the NFL Draft

The 2015 NFL Draft is officially in the books. Teams had a total of 256 selections in this year’s draft, counting a total of 32 compensatory picks. As expected, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers used the first overall pick on quarterback Jameis Winston of Florida State. That was the popular pick for much of the pre-draft process, and while some thought Marcus Mariota of Oregon had a shot here, it’s not a surprise that Winston came off the board first.

The biggest surprise of the first 10 picks had to be USC defensive end Leonard Williams sliding down the sixth pick, to the Jets. He was widely expected to be one of the first three players off the board and most experts considered him the best player overall in the draft. Either way, the Jets have one fearsome defensive line now.

2015 NFL Draft: The complete list of traded picks

The value of picks differs from team to team. Some utilize a variant of the old draft chart developed by Jimmy Johnson in the early 90s. That chart places very heavy value on selections in the top 10 and decidedly little value to those in rounds four through seven. Other teams take a more analytical approach to trading picks, using expected return to decipher what each selection is worth.

Gathered below is every pick that no longer resides with its original owner. We’ll be updating this tracker throughout the draft.

    NFL Draft picks by position

    Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

After Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota went No. 1 and No. 2 in Thursday’s first round, it wasn’t until midway through the third round on Friday that another quarterback -- Colorado State’s Garrett Grayson, selected by the Saints with the 75th pick -- would be picked, though Oregon State’s Sean Mannion would be selected by the Rams before the night was out.

Only three more would go during the final four rounds on Saturday, though, with only the Jets’ selection of Baylor’s Bryce Petty likely to produce a potential 2015 starter; the Packers (who drafted UCLA’s Brett Hundley) and Broncos (who snagged Northwestern QB Trevor Siemian) would seem to be set at the position.

La’el Collins could wait until 2016 NFL Draft

    Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Earlier this week, Collins had to leave Chicago, the site of the 2015 draft, to cooperate with police in Louisiana following the murder of his ex-girlfriend. Police questioned him in connection with the case, but he is not considered a suspect.

Collins is considered one of the top offensive tackle prospects in his class. He was rated as the No. 12 overall prospect in the draft by SB Nation’s Dan Kadar, and was thought to be a surefire first-round pick on many draft boards. However, after the story of the murder broke, many NFL teams reportedly considered Collins “undraftable” until his name is cleared in the investigation.

2015 NFL Draft: Selection order for Rounds 2-7

    Dennis Wierzbicki-USA TODAY Sports

There were fewer trades than there usually are during the first round of the NFL Draft—and none until midway through the first round—but teams are far more likely to start swapping picks as the process wears on. And so the 2015 NFL Draft order, tied to record for all seven rounds, is going to start diverging wildly from how the standings ended in the 2014 season.

Here’s the current order for Rounds 2 through 7 of the 2015 NFL Draft:

Randy Gregory wants vengeance after Round 1

    Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

“I didn’t sleep last night because I feel like I let my family down,” Gregory told ESPN’s Ed Werder. “The team that drafts me won’t have to worry about me off the field. Teams that didn’t will have to worry about me on the field.”

The good news for whichever team selects Gregory is that he will be highly motivated to prove himself. Don’t expect him to wait long Friday night to hear his name called.

    Winston signs contract with Buccaneers

    Phil Sears-USA TODAY Sports

Of course, this would be a much-bigger deal a few years ago, before the 2011 collective bargaining agreement put in place a rookie wage scale. Since that was established, there’s very little to actually negotiate when it comes to rookie contracts, as they’re crafted based on draft positioning and are all standard four-year contracts.

In previous years, any number of things could hold up a contract. Even good deals were ignored early on in the post-draft process, as players wanted to wait and see what other players drafted around them and at their position managed to sign with their new teams. Disputes about a player’s value didn’t often lead to rookie holdouts, but they did happen from time to time.

Trades could open the second day of the draft

    Greg Bartram-USA TODAY Sports

Other teams could be targeting the bevy of available offensive linemen. T.J. Clemmings and Jake Fisher, both who could have realistically come off the board on Day 1, may not have to wait much longer to hear their names called. The same also applies to Penn State offensive tackle Donovan Smith.

Here are the best remaining players according to SB Nation’s draft expert Dan Kadar.

Malcom Brown: I’m the best player NE ever drafted

    Brett Deering/Getty Images

“Y’all about to get the best player y’all have ever drafted,” Brown said. “So just be ready for when I touch the field.”

Outperforming Brady for the title of best Patriots draft pick ever won’t be easy, especially as the quarterback is still playing at a high level. However, like Brady, Brown’s conviction comes from seeing so many other players hearing their names called before him.

Panthers pick Shaq Thompson was worst MiLBer ever

    Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

Shaq Thompson was one of the most awesome prospects in the NFL Draft, a highlight reel on offense and defense in college. Now he’s been picked by the Panthers -- he’ll be a linebacker -- but it’s not the first time he’s been drafted by a pro sports team.

In 2012, Thompson was the 18th-round selection of the Boston Red Sox. He played one season of minor league baseball, for Boston’s lowest-level minor league team, in the rookie ball Gulf Coast League.

Adrian Peterson’s agent changes tune with Vikings

    Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

“One of the things that I appreciate with the Vikings is their resolve to say ‘we’re not trading him,’” Dogra told USA TODAY Sports Thursday night after the Vikings didn’t trade Peterson away. “That tells me they value him not only as a football player, but what he’s done for the organization.

“I actually, as an agent, not only appreciate it -- I accept it. But actions speak louder than words. If that’s going to happen, and you want to keep him, then show him a commitment to make him retire as a Viking. And I haven’t had that solution.”

Trust factors heavily into 1st-round picks

    Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images

Each of the 32 people making selections in the first round here knew character counts. Hernandez is guilty. Collins? No one knows what he knows or even if he is involved. But these two occurrences sent shocks and chills across the league that was evident in how the draft unfolded. Teams did their homework. They read those background checks. They talked to mothers and cousins and teachers and coaches incessantly about these players.

And they picked players at the top of the draft with a clear mixture of talent/character as their blueprint.

Draft grades roundup: Most picks solid, few panned

    Joe Robbins/Getty Images

In the heat of the moment, when your team’s draft pick has just been announced, a lot of thoughts can go through your mind: “That choice is perfect!” “A fine pick, ol’ chap! I can see him contributing to our goals this year.” And, of course: “WHAT THE HELL WHERE THEY THINKING?!?”

The reviews for the Tennessee Titans’ no-brainer selection of Marcus Mariota — after Winston came off the board, Mariota was clearly the best QB available — were generally positive: Bleacher Report awarded an A-plus, SI.com an A-minus, and both SB Nation and NFL.com graded the pick as a B-plus.

Winston, Mariota go 1-2 in NFL Draft

    Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Winston -- the 2013 Heisman winner who overcame a turbulent off-field career at Florida State -- had long been a lock to go off the board first to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But after weeks of trade rumors, it was a mild surprise when the Tennessee Titans stuck with their No. 2 pick and grabbed Mariota, who won the trophy this past season after guiding Oregon to the national championship game. Current Philadelphia Eagles coach and former Oregon coach Chip Kelly did his best to pry the No. 2 pick away, offering up a treasure trove in exchange for rights to Mariota, but the Titans held fast.

NFL Draft grades 2015: Results mixed

    Dennis Wierzbicki-USA TODAY Sports

These grades were decided on a number of factors: Relative value, need, system fit, risk and potential were the chief factors that went into the grades. Some of the grades were made dependent on teams making picks later in the draft that better fill needs, relative of course to value.

The obvious choice happened, and it’s what the Buccaneers needed to do. The team has never had a franchise quarterback, and Winston has a chance to be that player. He’s a classic pocket passer with size and arm strength. From a football intelligence standpoint, he’s ready to go. But there is some risk because he’ll throw the ball into double coverage or fail to recognize defensive backs underneath. You also can’t totally ignore Winston’s off-field transgressions.

    Patriots draft Malcom Brown

    John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

With the No. 32 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots selected defensive tackle Malcom Brown of Texas. Brown was a second-team All-Big 12 selection in 2014 and is a very complete defensive lineman.

Brown is a big guy who will be asked to eat up space, but he also penetrates the line very well. He’s not a pass rusher first, but he’s able to get into the backfield and make life tough for opposing quarterbacks. He can come in and start at the defensive tackle position as a rookie. He was a first-team All-American and was a finalist for the Outland Trophy and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy for this 2014 season.

Saints take Stephone Anthony with 31st pick

    Joshua S. Kelly-USA TODAY Sports

Anthony led Clemson with 75 tackles, forced two fumbles and had an interception in 2014. He was a first-team All-ACC player and semifinalist for the Butkus Award. Anthony compiled 86 tackles with 13.5 tackles for loss in 2013.

The biggest knocks against Anthony are that he struggles to get off blocks and doesn’t always engage with blockers. Because he’s not great at disengaging with blockers, he’ll occasionally avoid them, unintentionally opening up running lanes. But it’s one of few real complaints with his game. Anthony looks like an NFL starter.

Randall drafted by Packers at No. 30

    Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

With the No. 30 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers selected Arizona State safety Damarious Randall. Randall was a first-team All-Pac-12 selection in 2014 and a two-year starter with Arizona State.

Randall finished his career with Sun Devils with 177 tackles, 15 of which were for a loss, and six interceptions. He also had two defensive touchdowns, one in each of his two seasons, and six total interceptions.
