When the Dallas Cowboys selected gifted safety Byron Jones at No. 27 overall, it assured something else: Adrian Peterson will remain with the Minnesota Vikings for the time being. Peterson has been the subject of trade rumors since being reinstated earlier in April, but the two teams considered to be the Vikings most-likely trade partners -- the Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals -- made their selections without dealing with Minnesota, as ESPN's Adam Schefter noted.
Vikings don’t trade Adrian Peterson during 1st round of 2015 NFL Draft
It appears that Adrian Peterson will remain a Viking for the time being, after the no deal surfaced with the Cardinals or Cowboys during the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft.
Reports leading up to the draft suggested that the Vikings were insistent that they wouldn’t be trading Peterson. With Peterson coming off a lost season due to suspension and set to cost $15.4 million against the cap, few would have been surprised if the franchise jettisoned the veteran to help PR and create some financial space.
Last September, Peterson was indicted on child abuse charges after he allegedly beat his four-year-old son with a switch. Peterson was placed on the commissioner’s permission/exempt list before ultimately earning a suspension.
Peterson himself didn’t seem keen on returning with Minnesota upon his reinstatement. He had little leverage with three seasons and most of his $86 million contract still to be paid. General manager Rick Spielman never wavered and it’s not hard to understand why: Peterson is still an NFL Hall of Fame talent, despite his obvious flaws.
