Both the San Diego Chargers and Cincinnati Bengals got their seasons started off on the right foot in Week 1, though they took ifferent paths to victory. For Philip Rivers and the Chargers, it was about overcoming two first-half interceptions and chasing down a three-score deficit. For the Bengals, it was all about taking advantage of an Oakland Raiders team that didn't look ready for the regular season.
Chargers vs. Bengals 2015 live stream: Time, TV schedule and how to watch online
The San Diego Chargers and Cincinnati Bengals are both in a tough division. One of them will have a better shot at winning it after Sunday.
Rivers finished San Diego's opener having completed 35 of 42 passes for 404 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. It wasn't the strongest performance for Rivers, who received a massive four-year contract extension this offseason. But at the end of the day, he got things done against a tough Detroit Lions defense and led the Chargers to a win, giving them an early leg-up in the AFC West.
With the Denver Broncos winning their second game, but looking beatable in the process, it's even more important for the Chargers to hold on and find a way to win against Andy Dalton's Bengals on Sunday.
Dalton had a fine outing against a Raiders defense that many suggested could be good this season. He completed 25 of 34 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns, with no interceptions. He was also assisted by Jeremy Hill and Giovani Bernard, who each put up 63 rushing yards, with Hill also scoring two touchdowns.
One thing the Chargers did well on defense in Week 1 was limit Detroit's running game. Ameer Abdullah put up 50 yards and a touchdown, but the Lions only had a total of 69 rushing yards in the game. In fact, San Diego's defense was fairly good at getting off the field; it just wound up being a high-scoring affair on both sides of the ball. On defense, the Chargers should expect a similar attack to the one the Lions put up in Week 1.
The Bengals will try and run the ball with Bernard and Hill, and Dalton will certainly be looking for breakout tight end Tyler Eifert, who had 104 yards and two touchdowns against the Raiders. A.J. Green is always dangerous as well, and put up 63 yards on five receptions. It's a tall order for San Diego's defense, though the Bengals will have to deal with Keenan Allen and Stevie Johnson, who put up over 200 yards combined in their debut. Allen managed 15 catches for 166 yards in his game. Few expected that kind of game out of Allen, and all eyes will be on him Sunday.
Both of these teams play in a competitive division, with the Chargers having to contend with the aforementioned Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Bengals playing in an AFC North that put three teams into the postseason last year. Both the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers have looked beatable for Cincinnati, and the Chiefs and Broncos also haven't looked great, so either of these two teams could wind up in control of their division down the line.
One of them will have a much better chance at it after Sunday’s game.
