The Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks are set to play in a rematch of last year's NFC Championship game, though this isn't a matchup of two 1-0 teams as we were expecting coming into the season. Instead, the Packers managed to win their Week 1 game, while the Seahawks fell to the NFC West rival St. Louis Rams in overtime.
Seahawks vs. Packers 2015 picks and predictions: Most experts favoring Green Bay
It’s an NFC Championship rematch and if the experts are correct, it’ll go the other direction this time around.
That shouldn't diminish what is considered one of the best matchups of the season, of course. Green Bay looked well on its way to playing in the Super Bowl when the Seahawks put up two late touchdowns and stole the win thanks to a recovered onside kick. Coincidentally, it was a kickoff that doomed the Seahawks against the Rams on Sunday, as the team was trying something of a squib kick but they messed it up, giving the Rams excellent field position.
Green Bay has a history of losing in Seattle, but have beaten the Seahawks the last five times the two have played at Lambeau Field, the site of Sunday's game. They're also riding the momentum from their win over the AFC North rival Chicago Bears in their opening game.
Aaron Rodgers completed 18 of 23 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions in that game. He found James Jones, who was signed as a free agent shortly before the game, four times for 51 yards and two touchdowns. The loss of Jordy Nelson for the season will surely hurt the Packers at some point this year, but Rodgers and Jones have a good connection, and Randall Cobb also caught a touchdown in Week 1 as well.
On the ground, Green Bay managed 133 total rushing yards, 85 of which came from Eddie Lacy, who also had a touchdown run. They were nearly flawless on the offensive side of the ball, something they'll probably need to be against a strong Seahawks defense, even if it didn't look amazing in Week 1.
The Seahawks managed to limit the Rams to 76 total rushing yards in their game, but Nick Foles put up 297 yards and a touchdown in his first game starting for them. Meanwhile, Russell Wilson completed 32 of 41 passes for 251 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Running back Marshawn Lynch had 18 carries for 73 yards and Wilson himself put up another 31.
Seattle's defense just couldn't get off the field, and they allowed big plays in areas they typically did not allow them last season.. That could have a lot to do with safety Kam Chancellor not being in the game due to a contract holdout. Chancellor was replaced by Dion Bailey, who struggled at times, especially on the deep ball. Chancellor is one of the best in the league at what he does and if he's not on the opposite side of Earl Thomas on Sunday, you can expect Rodgers to try and get the ball in that part of the field more often than naught.
As far as the experts are concerned, seven of the eight with CBS Sports went with Green Bay in this one. Only Jared Dubin dissented for them. At ESPN, 12 of the 13 experts picking also went with the Packers to win.
Here at SB Nation, the experts were a little more divided. Five of them went with the Seahawks to win, with just two (plus OddsShark) picking the Packers.
