49ers trade up, draft Stanford guard Joshua Garnett at No. 28

The 49ers moved up to land Garnett, who will likely be protecting Blaine Gabbert next season.

The San Francisco 49ers selected Stanford guard Joshua Garnett with the No. 28 overall pick in the draft after making a move up in the first round. They traded with the Kansas City Chiefs for the move, and earlier in the draft selected Oregon defensive end Deforest Buckner with the No. 7 overall pick.

Garnett fills a huge need for the 49ers, who struggled at the guard position last season. Jordan Devey was their starting right guard and he was one of the worst in the league. On top of that, they lost Alex Boone in free agency this offseason.

New head coach Chip Kelly dealt with guard issues for years with Philadelphia, so it’s not surprising to see his first big move with the 49ers be a move up to take one of the top guard prospects in the draft.

Garnett was the Outland Trophy winner for 2015, given to the top interior lineman in college football. He was also a first-team All-Pac 12 guard and is a punishing run blocker. That’s great for the 49ers, because they plan to run hard with Carlos Hyde next season, given the issues at the quarterback position.
