The Giants, even minus their top three wide receivers, looked like a completely different team. They finally got their first win of the season in a dominating 23-10 win over the Broncos in Denver.
Giants vs. Broncos 2017 live updates: Scores, results, and highlights for ‘SNF’
The Giants got their first win of the season. Here’s what happened.

Final score: Giants 23, Broncos 10
Fourth quarter: Giants 23, Broncos 10 Orleans Darkwa notched the first 100-yard rushing game of his career, finishing with a total of 117 yards on the ground.
The Giants added a 40-yard field goal with about 30 seconds left.
Fourth quarter: Giants 20, Broncos 10 The Broncos finally got in the end zone! Trevor Siemian zipped a pass to tight end Jeff Heuerman for a 13-yard score.
The Giants get the ball back, and that gives Orleans Darkwa a chance to go over 100 yards in the game. He currently has more yards than these four running backs gained against the Broncos, combined: Melvin Gordon (54), Ekeziel Elliott (8), LeSean McCoy (21), and Marshawn Lynch (12).
Fourth quarter: Giants 20, Broncos 3 The Broncos were able to put a nice drive together, even down a couple receivers and a hobbled Demaryius Thomas. But then they got stood up at the goal line on fourth-and-1. The Giants are closing in on their first win of the season.
Fourth quarter: Giants 20, Broncos 3 Demaryius Thomas picked up a first down on fourth-and-5, but then Janoris Jenkins stripped the ball. Eli Apple was there to recover it.
And to make matters worse for the Broncos, Emmanuel Sanders is out for the game with an ankle injury. WR Isaiah McKenzie was also carted off with an ankle injury.
Oh, and Al Michaels made a joke about Harvey Weinstein for no reason whatsoever. He later apologized.
Third quarter: Giants 20, Broncos 3 The Giants tried to match the Broncos with their own blocked field goal attempt.
Sunday Night Football, y’all!
Third quarter: Giants 20, Broncos 3 A 53-yard field goal attempt for a kicker who has struggled this year? What could possibly go wro—
Yep.
Third quarter: Giants 20, Broncos 3 The good news for the Broncos is that Trevor Siemian is back in the game. The bad news is that the Giants are still rolling. They added a 51-yard field goal to extend their lead halfway through the third quarter.
Halftime: Giants 17, Broncos 3 And the currently winless Giants are dominating the Broncos in the first half, just like no one expected.
Second quarter: Giants 17, Broncos 3 BROCK OSWEILER ALERT. The Denver one-time and current backup is in the game after Trevor Siemian left with a left shoulder injury. He’s questionable to return.
Second quarter: Giants 17, Broncos 3 Stanford had a jackrabbit on its field last night. Trevor Siemian should’ve remembered the Giants have a jackrabbit too:
Janoris Jenkins’ pick-six puts the Giants up by 14.
Second quarter: Giants 10, Broncos 3 The Broncos finally looked like the woke up. Trevor Siemian hit Demaryius Thomas for a 40-yard gain and that got them to the 10-yard line ... where three incomplete passes led to a field goal attempt.
And this time, Brandon McManus made it. Points!
Second quarter: Giants 10, Broncos 0 The Broncos got a break when Demaryius Thomas’ fumble was overturned — but then a few plays later, Trevor Siemian was picked off by Landon Collins. He then .. Idk, growled?
Second quarter: Giants 10, Broncos 0 The Giants’ OL opened up a hole to spring Orleans Darkwa for a huge 47-yard game on third down that got them close to the goal line.
Eli Manning found Evan Engram for a short 5-yard touchdown, and well, it looks like this new play calling is working, huh?
First quarter: Giants 3, Broncos 0 The Broncos finally got something started on offense, thanks in big part to a 33-yard catch by Emmanuel Sanders. But then they stalled in the red zone and Brandon McManus’ 35-yard FG attempt wobbled wide right.
First quarter: Giants 3, Broncos 0 The Broncos avoided a disaster after the Giants jumped on a fumbled punt return. But the refs flagged the Giants for not giving the Denver return man enough room to make the catch:
The Broncos’ struggling offense takes over.
First quarter: Giants 3, Broncos 0 Some interesting news came out on the Sunday Night Football broadcast. Giants offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan is now calling plays, not head coach Ben McAdoo.
The early results, so far, are positive. The Giants picked up four first downs, though the Broncos clamped down in the red zone to force a field goal.
Before the game
Odell Beckham Jr., Brandon Marshall, and Dwayne Harris were the top three receivers on the roster for the New York Giants... and all three have been lost to season-ending injuries. Eli Manning and the Giants are currently winless with no real prospects at changing their fortunes.
On Sunday, they will play the Denver Broncos in a Week 6 Sunday Night Football matchup, beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET on NBC (live streaming via NBC Sports).
New York finished their last game, against the Los Angeles Chargers, with Roger Lewis as the only healthy receiver on the entire roster. They hope to get Sterling Shepard back from injury, and re-signed Tavarres King, but there’s still a huge void at the position and Manning was already struggling.
Manning has completed 137 of 202 passes (67.8 percent) for 1,338 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions. He’s been sacked 13 times, and gets very little in the way of run support. The Giants have just 100 carries for 389 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, while their opponent’s have out-gained them with 695 rushing yards.
The Broncos, meanwhile, are coming off an early-season bye week sitting at 3-1 on the season. Their last game was a win over the tough Oakland Raiders, and they are looking at a tougher schedule on the horizon. They will play the Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots in a three-game stretch from Weeks 8 through 10.
That means they can’t stumble against poor teams, which means the Giants. The Broncos lost to the Buffalo Bills in Week 3, but own wins over the Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers and Dallas Cowboys. They can’t afford to lose to a team like the Giants, especially with the AFC West being so competitive this year.
Pregame reading
- The Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie suspension is a big deal, and the team still isn’t entirely clear what’s happening. Head coach Ben McAdoo hasn’t discussed the suspension with the rest of the team, and that’s a problem, according to Big Blue View.
- Giants fans are worried about Manning given that Von Miller is on the other side of the field. Miller will be working against a depleted offensive line, and that means Manning will be under fire:
Miller generally lines up over the right tackle, and Giants right tackle Bobby Hart was atrocious last week. Joey Bosa absolutely abused him. If Hartplays, and I’m not convinced that the Giants won’t once again shuffle the offensive line and put Justin Pugh at right tackle, the Giants will have to give Hart help. A lot of it. Chip blocks, lining a tight end up on that side as often as possible. Whatever it takes.
- The Giants, in addition to needing help at wide receiver, are hurting on the offensive line. They have tried out five different offensive linemen, and took visits from two others.
- Von Miller is a big deal for the Broncos, but he believes the recently-injured Beckham should be the highest-paid player in the NFL, over quarterbacks and everyone else. The folks at Mile High Report examine whether or not a non-QB can actually do that:
As a Super Bowl MVP, Miller understands how his popularity impacts revenue for the league. He knows Beckham’s popularity goes far beyond NFL fans. With the amount of money being generated by players like Beckham and Miller, there is definitely an argument to be made for non-QBs to start making more money.
- While the Giants are severely depleted due to injury, it’s nearly all hands on deck for the Broncos. They will be without Cody Latimer and Paxton Lynch, while everyone else is fairly healthy and not worthy of being on the injury report.
- It’s not necessarily about winning at this point, at least as far as Giants fans are concerned. They just want to see good football:
In all honesty, the Giants are under-manned and in serious turmoil internally. My key to the game is really what kind of effort the Giants bring. They’re a shell-shocked team right now between the record, the injuries and the internal strife. The Broncos are going to win the game. It’s a question of whether the Giants will play hard and make them earn it, or go through the motions and embarrass themselves in front of a national audience.
- Broncos fans, on the other hand, are well aware that their team can’t afford to stumble in a game they absolutely should win. The Giants game qualifies as one of those:
It’s tough to win on the road. That gets even steeper when the games are in the division. You never know what to expect let alone how to predict what will happen. The old cliche, “you can throw the records out” is true. After Sunday’s game, 11 games remain and only four at Mile High Stadium.
Yes, the Broncos should win this game for obvious reasons ... the biggest is that New York is a hot mess and this shouldn’t be close. Denver also needs to win this game for what lies ahead; a brutal stretch that starts with three-straight road games.
- Determining who the Giants will declare inactive for Sunday’s game should be pretty easy, as their official Friday injury report ruled out a total of six players. That’s in addition to all the players who recently went on injured reserve.
