There’s just one left month in the NFL regular season and the games are starting to heat up in intensity as the playoff picture comes into focus.
Week 13 kicked off with two teams in first place in their respective divisions when the New Orleans Saints traveled to take on the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium. The Saints were 8-point favorites and came into this game on a 10-game winning streak, but the Cowboys were able to pull the upset for a surprising 13-10 win. The Cowboys are now on a four-game winning streak and prevented the Saints from clinching a playoff spot this week.
Instead, the Rams became the first team to clinch a spot in the playoffs this season. The Raiders and 49ers were the first two teams to be officially eliminated.
Expert picks
It hasn’t been a great week for our experts. Our entire panel picked the Saints to beat the Cowboys (whoops) and the Bears over the Giants (double whoops). Only the coin flip went for the Cardinals over the heavily favored Packers, while just one person went with the Jaguars over their division rival, the Colts. See all of our Week 13 expert picks here.
Big news
After falling to the lowly Cardinals at home, the Packers fired Mike McCarthy. It was their third loss in a row. Joe Philbin will take over while they look for a new coach to pair with Aaron Rodgers in 2019.
Best moments
The Bears pulled off two incredible trick plays against the Giants. First, they paid homage to Refrigerator Perry by giving defensive lineman Akiem Hicks the ball on fourth-and-goal for a big-man touchdown. Then, with no time left, running back Tarik Cohen threw a touchdown to Anthony Miller to send the game to overtime. The Giants lost, but hats off to Matt Nagy.
The Giants had their own fun, though. Odell Beckham Jr. kept his perfect passer rating this season with a beauty of a touchdown throw to Sterling Shepard. According to Shepard, the play was a little freelanced — he wasn’t even supposed to be the target. Maybe it’s time for the Giants to bench Eli Manning for Beckham?
The Seahawks have, hands down, the best touchdown celebration game in the NFL right now. They welcomed Richard Sherman back to Seattle by recreating his NFC Championship tip after their first touchdown against the 49ers. On their next touchdown, they pretended to dig for gold. They reenacted a scene from the Eddie Murphy film Life. And they did the Macarena, with David Moore practicing it on the sideline beforehand.
In milestone news, TOM BRADY IS FINALLY A 1,000-YARD RUSHER.

An updated look at the 2019 NFL Draft order

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY SportsThe 2019 NFL Draft is here. On Thursday night the Arizona Cardinals made Kyler Murray the No. 1 overall pick. The Raiders made a bit of a surprise at No. 4 overall by taking Clemson defensive end Clelin Ferrell, who should’ve had more buzz around him leading up to the draft. The New York Giants had the first out-there pick at No. 6 when they took Duke quarterback Daniel Jones. The pick has been widely panned, leading the Giants into immediate spin control on why Jones is a good pick.
While you wait for day 2 of the NFL draft to begin on Friday night, be sure to read retired NFL lineman Geoff Schwartz on his seven takeaways from day 1 and Dan Kadar’s draft grades for all 32 picks on Thursday night.

Jerry Hughes was heated after the Buffalo Bills’ 21-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins and it was an official who drew his ire. A video from shortly after the game ended shows Hughes yelling at and threatening an official who he says called the Bills defensive end “a bitch.”
The official Hughes was talking to, Roy Ellison, was put on administrative leave on Tuesday night.

Kyle Shanahan was pretty angry during the San Francisco 49ers’ Week 13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, and for a variety of reasons. His team only has two wins, everybody is hurt, and they were getting beaten down by a divisional rival.
But one incident in particular occurred late in the third quarter, when Shanahan was called for unsportsmanlike conduct while arguing with a referee. According to Shanahan, though, there was a good reason for that: Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson apparently threw 49ers linebacker Fred Warner’s shoe.

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY SportsThe NFL has taken steps to make the game safer, including implementing a new rule this offseason that penalizes helmet-to-helmet hits. But we’re still seeing referees miss easy calls that should flagged.
On Thursday night in Week 13, Saints running back Alvin Kamara took a brutal hit from Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith that left him stumbling as he tried to get off the ground.

Photo by Mitchell Leff/Getty ImagesWashington just can’t escape the quarterback injuries. After Colt McCoy stepped in for the injured Alex Smith, McCoy injured his right leg in the second quarter of their Monday night game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He underwent X-rays in the locker room, which revealed a fractured fibula. His season is now over.
You know what that means. It’s Mark Sanchez time for the rest of the season. Sanchez was signed on Nov. 19 after Smith’s season-ending leg injury. The veteran quarterback hadn’t thrown a pass since 2016, when he was a member of the Dallas Cowboys. He hasn’t started a game since 2015 ... when he was a member of the Philadelphia Eagles!

Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner left Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers after sustaining a lower leg injury late in the fourth quarter. Conner went down hard and stayed down for some time, before being helped off the field with assistance from team trainers. Head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters after the game Conner suffered a lower leg contusion. He’d later downgrade Conner’s condition from “contusion” to “sprain.”
Although there is no official word beyond that, the injury is not expected to be serious but will keep the second-year back out of Week 14’s tilt against the Oakland Raiders.

Tim Fuller-USA TODAY SportsWith Week 13 in the rearview mirror, the NFL playoff picture is starting to get locked in. Just four weeks remain in the regular season, and though there have been many surprises this season, we have a good idea of who will be making it as division representatives. The wild card is also shaping up nicely.
On Sunday, the Rams clinched the NFC West, while the 49ers and Raiders are officially out of contention.

In his first game action since 2016, Mark Sanchez had another incident with a fumble and his butt. It wasn’t as breathtakingly iconic as his famous “butt fumble” that he had in 2012 when he was member of the New York Jets, but it was still funny.
Sanchez was stripped from behind by Eagles defensive lineman Brandon Graham as he was trying to avoid a sack and the ball slipped between his legs. Luckily, he was able to sit on the ball and regain possession instead of turning it over to the Eagles.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick had some not-so-nice words for Minnesota Vikings receiver Adam Thielen in the fourth quarter of their Week 13 matchup.

Photo by Mike Ehrmann/Getty ImagesIf you’re a fan of great quarterback play, the early slate of Week 13’s matchups featured exactly half a game for you. That came courtesy of Deshaun Watson, who started his game against the Browns on fire, then cruised through the second half of a blowout that pushed the Texans one step closer to the AFC South title.
But for just about everyone else, including the quarterback standing across the field from Watson, Sunday was a day of mourning and regret.

Photo by Dylan Buell/Getty ImagesAaron Rodgers’ birthday was bittersweet. The Packers lost to the Cardinals at home, 20-17, but Mike McCarthy was fired.
The Cardinals were 2-9 coming into the game, one of the NFL’s worst teams this season. Sunday, they didn’t really do much of anything that would have led you to think that they would have beat the Packers. Josh Rosen was just 11-of-26 for 149 yards passing with a quarterback rating of 38. David Johnson had just 69 yards, while Chase Edmonds had 53 yards and two touchdowns.

Just a few days after the Saints lost to the Cowboys in a messy 13-10 game on Thursday night, we got an even lower-scoring game between the Colts and Jaguars. Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY SportsEarlier in the 2018 season, the Los Angeles Chargers scored a touchdown thanks to a down judge missing a penalty so obvious that it made him the first NFL official of the Super Bowl era to get fired midseason. Less than two months later, the Chargers benefitted from the same exact thing.

Photo by Kevork Djansezian/Getty ImagesBy the end of the month, the NFL playoff picture will be officially set. But December just started and before Sunday, no teams had clinched a spot — and no teams had been eliminated. Not even the Raiders!
That’s not that unusual. Last year, we didn’t see a team punch its postseason ticket until Week 14, when the Eagles won the NFC East title and lost Carson Wentz in the same day. They, of course, went on to become Super Bowl champions. That could be a good omen for the Rams, who beat the Lions Sunday to become the first team to clinch a playoff berth this season.

Benny Sieu-USA TODAY SportsAfter an embarrassing 20-17 loss to the 3-9 Arizona Cardinals, the Green Bay Packers have fired head coach Mike McCarthy. McCarthy’s final season with the Packers wound up with a 4-7-1 record. The team announced the move Sunday evening, not long after the game.
