It took seven rounds of a shootout, but the Penguins Dustin Jeffrey scored the lone goal in the shootout to give the Penguins a 4-3 victory over their Atlantic Division rivals.
Penguins Vs. Rangers: Dustin Jeffrey Scores Shootout Winner; Pens Win 4-3
The Rangers took an early 1-0 lead in the first period off a Brandon Prust goal. The Rangers followed that up with a quick goal to start the second period from Artem Anisimov. The Penguins offense woke up at that point and went on a three goal run with goals from Jeffrey, Michael Rupp, and Chris Kunitz.
The game turned physical at the 15:27 mark of the second period when during a scrum by the benches, Jordan Staal throws a punch at an unsuspecting Brandon Prust. Both players shoved each other back and forth and Staal got an extra punch in after the fact which Prust sold really, really well. Staal was given a game misconduct and a match penalty for the punch which comes with an automatic suspension subject to review by the league.
The Rangers capitalized on the ensuing five minute power play from a Ryan Callahan goal with 13 seconds left in the period. Michael Del Zotto and Mats Zuccarello assisted on the goal. After two periods, the Rangers and Penguins had tied the game at three. The third period had a few chances by both teams but saw the Rangers outshoot the Penguins 11-2. Marc-Andre Fleury and Henrik Lundqvist kept the period scoreless to ultimately send the game to the shootout.
Henrik Lundqvist made 23 saves in the loss while Marc-Andre Fleury made 26 saves in the win. The Rangers will face off against the Devils at MSG on Thursday while the Penguins will head to the Nassau Coliseum to face the Islanders on Wednesday.
