The Toronto Maple Leafs are still in the hunt for the postseason, but let’s call Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Thrashers just a minor set back.
Maple Leafs Vs. Thrashers: Atlanta Comeback Makes Eastern Playoff Race Tighter
After jumping out to a two-goal lead on the heels of Nikolai Kulemin and Phil Kessel and holding that lead for most of the game, a quick strike from Andrew Ladd got the Atlanta Thrashers on the board in the third period.
The Thrashers kept up the intensity throughout the third period, and it ultimately paid off with less than five minutes remaining in the game. Tim Stapleton, who earlier last week had been a victim of waivers, scored a game-tying goal -- his first tally of the season.
Then, 150 seconds into overtime, Ron Hainsey completed the comeback, ending a five-game skid for the Thrashers, who now, more importantly, sit tied with the Leafs in the Eastern playoff picture (although the Leafs do hold the tiebreaker). They are both just five points behind eighth-place Carolina and are very much in the hunt for the postseason.
