It's going to take Blake Geoffrion more than just ten NHL games to live up to his pedigree, but his heroics on Sunday night in Buffalo certainly won't hurt things. The rookie forward of the Nashville Predators scored two late goals in just over a minute to boost his team over the Sabres and into seventh place in the Western Conference.
Predators Vs. Sabres: Blake Geoffrion Scores Hat Trick As Nashville Rallies Past Buffalo
Here’s a look at the second goal, which came with 1:23 left in the period.
The two goals gave Geoffrion a hat trick on the night and improbably tied the score when the hope of earning even just a point was fading for the Preds. The momentum carried over into overtime, when Martin Erat scored just 27 seconds later. Nashville wins.
There’s no downplaying just how big the win was for the Preds. Had they lost, as it looked like they were going to with just two minutes remaining, they would have sat in ninth place in the West, one point behind both Dallas and Anaheim despite having played one less game. Instead, having earned two points, the Preds now lead those teams by one point and sit tied with 85 points with fifth place Chicago and sixth place Los Angeles.
The loss doesn’t hurt the Sabres nearly as much, especially thanks to the fact that they did earn one point in the game. Buffalo sits in eighth place in the East, three points ahead of ninth place Carolina and three points behind seventh place New York.
