Since the sale of the Buffalo Sabres to Terry Pegula went through a few weeks back, the team had gone all seven games in the new era without a regulation loss. Yes, they picked up points in every single one of those games at the most crucial part of the season for a bubble team.
Sabres Vs. Penguins: Buffalo Loses First Time In Terry Pegula Era
That had to end eventually, though, and thanks to James Neal's first Penguins goal, Pittsburgh was able to sneak by the Sabres by a score of 3-1. It ended a rough stretch for the Pens in which they hadn't won a regulation game since February 4th. That was the night Evgeni Malkin busted his knee and learned he'd miss the remainder of the season.
Somehow, the Penguins have been able to stay afloat in the Eastern Conference, mostly thanks to an ability to keep games close and get points in overtime. Despite going a month between regulation wins, Pittsburgh is still just two points back of the hated Philadelphia Flyers for first place in the Atlantic Division and the East overall.
With the loss, the Sabres failed to gain ground on the Carolina Hurricanes, although they still sit in eighth place, a game ahead of the Canes with 72 points.
