If one were to look at the raw stats, without looking at the score, it would appear the San Jose Sharks dominated the first period in Saturday night's playoff matchup with the Los Angeles Kings. The Sharks took 17 shots to the Kings' six and had Jonathan Quick under fire for much of the period. Yet the Kings hold a commanding 3-0 lead after finding the back of the net with half their shots on goal.
Kings Vs. Sharks Score: Los Angeles Holds Commanding 3-0 Lead At First Intermission
The scoring began in the fourth minute as Wayne Simmonds broke the scoreless tie to put the Kings in front, 1-0. Simmonds was credited with the goal after a scramble in front of the net saw a loose puck slide over the line as the light went on.
Kyle Clifford followed it up with a goal of his own just three minutes later, giving the Kings a commanding 2-0 lead. On a break, Clifford cleaned up the trash in front of the net, burying the shot to make it a two-goal lead. Wayne Simmonds and Brad Richardson were credited with the assists in what was an excellent period for Clifford.
Dustin Penner topped it off for the Kings just over a minute later and the rout was on. With a 3-0 lead, the Kings are in the drivers seat in Game 5, down 3-1 in the series. There's still plenty of hockey left, but Los Angeles has made the most of its limited chances thus far en route to a three-goal lead at the intermission.
