Believe it or not, there was a lengthy period this year where it seemed like the Washington Capitals might lose the Southeast Division, but after Tuesday night’s win in Toronto, the Caps look destined for the spot they’re very, very familiar with. For the fourth season in a row, they’re the best the Southeast has to offer.
Capitals Vs. Maple Leafs: Alex Ovechkin’s 300th Goal Helps Washington Clinch Southeast
Alex Ovechkin scored the 300th goal of his career in the second period to tie the game, and John Erskine score with about eight minutes left in the third to tie the game yet again before Mike Knuble scored the lone goal in the shootout to solidify the two points.
The win, coupled with Philadelphia’s loss in Ottawa, also boosted the Capitals into the top spot in the Eastern Conference. Their magic number to win that spot is now at three points, and with two games left, it’ll be up to the Caps to hold on to that position.
On the flip side, the Leafs failed to earn two points, which officially, finally ended their slim playoff hopes. By the time overtime came along, they probably already knew their fate thanks to Buffalo’s win over Tampa Bay, but no matter which way it’s cut, the Leafs aren’t playoff bound -- again.
