Just like the first two games of this series, the Detroit Red Wings are playing well, for the most part. The reason that qualifier is necessary is because they're still committing silly penalties, and the San Jose Sharks are still looking good on their power play. Once again, penalties and special teams are the story, but late in the first period, that story turned for the better if you're a Wings fan. Thanks to a late period power play goal by the Wings, the game is tied 1-1, the Joe is loud, and the Wings have the momentum going into the second period.
Sharks Vs. Red Wings, Game 3: Tie Game After One Period
San Jose got a power play opportunity in the middle of the period, thanks to a high stick by Darren Helm. They got a little more fortune during that power play, when a lucky bounce set up an easy goal for Devin Setoguchi. San Jose were up 1-0 early at the Joe, and once again, it appeared that Detroit's high intensity wasn't going to translate into a good result on the scoreboard.
The Red Wings' fortunes changed at the end of the period, though, as Ian White tripped Darren Helm, gifting the home team a power play. They capitalized on that opportunity, and Nicklas Lidstrom scored with 18 seconds remaining in the period to tie the game at 1-1.
The Wings out-hit the Sharks by the incredible margin of 17 to three in the first period. Hopefully for them, that intensity will soon translate to more goals.
