Sharks Vs. Red Wings, Game 3: San Jose Forces Overtime

For almost the entirety of the third period, the Detroit Red Wings played not to lose. Like it does for many other teams, their strategy completely backfired. The Wings did almost nothing offensively in the third period, instead deciding to concentrate on their defensive responsibilities. With just over four minutes remaining in the third period, the Sharks finally got their goal, as Dan Boyle put one past Jimmy Howard, assisted by Kyle Wellwood. Darren Helm was covering Boyle on the play, and he was caught puck watching when Wellwood passed to Boyle. The Sharks' offensive defenseman was left unattended, and his goal made it 3-3 on the night, forcing bonus hockey.

This is the second overtime game of the series, and this is a virtual do or die for the Red Wings. It would be very difficult to imagine a way that the Wings could come back from a 3-0 deficit, so they’ll have to play a virtually flawless overtime period.
