New York Rangers forward Sean Avery was arrested at his home in Hollywood early Friday morning after an alleged confrontation with police, who had been called to the residence after several noise complaints were made. Via the first report on the incident from TMZ:
Sean Avery Arrested For Allegedly Assaulting Police Officer
Sean Avery sits in a Hollywood jail cell Friday morning after an early morning arrest at his home. He allegedly shoved a police officer, who had arrived at the home to investigate noise complaints.
According to law enforcement sources, a neighbor called police to complain about the noise coming from Avery’s home. When police arrived at about 1:00 AM, we’re told Avery answered the door ... then shoved a cop and slammed the door behind him.
Police then knocked again, and we’re told the New York Rangers star came to his senses and opened up. According to law enforcement ... Avery was extremely cooperative after that, but was still booked for battery on a peace officer.
So basically, Avery was having a party, and when the authorities came to ask him to cool it down a bit, he treated them more like an NHL referee sending him to the box for tripping and less like an actual enforcer of the real law.
Of course, Avery is one of the most polarizing men in the game today. There’s no beating around the bush here, even if you’re a Rangers fan: Avery is a jerk on the ice. Effective, perhaps, but a jerk.
Off the ice he actually seems like a mild mannered (if eccentric) personality, and he’s polarized opinion about him even further by taking a strong stand in favor of gay rights. Despite what you think of him at the hockey rink, this actually seems like something that you’d expect from somebody other than Avery off of it.
Battery against a police officer is a serious charge, and Avery will have to face the music here one way or another, whether it be through the legal system or the media. Or both. He’s reportedly at the Hollywood jail Friday morning on $20,000 bail.
