It all started off according to plan ... well, sort of. Matt Carkner and Chris Neil made Brian Boyle answer for a few hits that didn’t please Ottawa in Game 1 but, despite the energy that clearly permeated the Sens game afterward, they couldn’t turn it into a number on the scoreboard.

Just 2:15 into the game, Carkner made a bee line across the ice to Boyle. He delivered a check, the two exchanged a few words, and then Carkner dropped his glove and sucker-punched Boyle in the face. A melee ensued, and there were casualties.
Carkner, meanwhile, was given two minutes for roughing, a five-minute major for fighting and a game misconduct, likely for sucker punching a guy in the face.

Getty ImagesThe No. 1 seeded New York Rangers were never really threatened by the Ottawa Senators in the first game of their first round series Thursday, although the 4-2 final score made the game look somewhat close. The Rangers were up 4-0 in the third period before surrendering two more-or-less meaningless goals - although the two unanswered scores should give hope to Sens fans.
The 8-over-1 upset isn’t impossible - hey, the Kings are doing it! - but if Ottawa wants to pull it off, they’ll need to start with a road win in Game 2. Judging from the Rangers’ early play, however, that will be tough.
