Fans at the Honda Center on Sunday were witnesses to a scary sight when Anaheim Ducks forward Dustin Penner was injured after a hit from Dallas Stars forward Ryan Garbutt.

A chippy game between former division rivals culminated in a scary incident on Sunday.

With the Ducks on the power play and Penner carrying the puck towards the Stars’ slot at 5:29 in the second period, Garbutt quickly exited the penalty box and laid a high hit on Penner. Penner collapsed to the ice in a heap, halting play immediately. Thankfully Penner was able to leave the ice without a stretcher, but his legs were extremely wobbly underneath him. The Ducks have updated the media about Penner’s injury:

No penalties were assessed to Garbutt, but the league will no doubt take a close look at the hit. If the NHL Department of Player Safety determines Garbutt led with his elbow to Penner’s head and left his feet, expect him to face a lengthy suspension.
This is just the latest in a series of questionable hits over the last few weeks. The Blues' Maxim Lapierre, the Sabres' Patrick Kaleta, the Avs' Cody McLeod and the Islanders' Michael Grabner have all either been suspended or scheduled to meet with the NHL about dangerous plays in the last two weeks.
